Hot Yoga 60 Minutes

Filed under: — site admin @ 4:18 am

Incase you missed this on 60 Minutes Wednesday: Hot Yoga 60 Minutes

(CBS) America’s obsession with good health and exercise is leading to a boom in yoga. One man at the forefront of the movement is Bikram Choudhury, an Indian yogi with an all-American approach.

Correspondent Mika Brzezinski reports Choudhury’s turning up the heat with his “torture chamber” yoga method. Dressed in nothing but a Rolex and a Speedo, the 59-year-old yoga guru pushes his students to contort ’til it hurts in a room heated to well over 100 degrees.

“I don’t sell cheesecake, you know that?” asks Choudhury. “So you come there to suffer. If you don’t suffer, you don’t get anything. Nothing easy in life.”

But isn’t yoga supposed to be relaxing and meditative – not torture? Choudhury says no: “That’s the biggest problem in America. That’s the way yoga [was] introduced to America. Yoga [in America] means sit and close your eyes and you will look at the lamp and look at the crystal and meditate.”

In Bikram yoga, meditation starts on the outside, in pushing the body to its extreme.

Choudhury explains, “You use the body as a medium to bring the mind back to the brain. Perfect married between body and mind. Then, you can knock the door to the spirit.”

His approach works, he says, because of the 105-degree heat, which loosens the body and allows the muscles and tendons to go farther and stretch even more.

The heat may make the body more limber, but it does nothing to stop a first-time Bikram student’s potential pain. In fact, one doctor who spoke to 60 Minutes Wednesday said that people taking Bikram yoga classes should be warned, given instructions on hydration and on modifying poses to avoid pushing the body too hard.

Choudhury mocks the suggestion. “Tell the doctor [that] I say to start chicken farm.” He adds, “What do you think I’m doing all this life? All these years?”

Judging by Choudhury’s appearance, his “hot” yoga looks to be a great path to preserving and improving health. In fact, the yogi believes medical science will prove Bikram yoga is good for you. He’s collaborating in two separate clinical trials, with doctors from the University of Southern California and Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in New York. They’re studying Bikram’s effect on bone density and the overall benefits of yoga.

In Hollywood, people have been swearing by Bikram yoga for decades. Choudhury lists Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Candice Bergen and Brooke Shields among his famous followers.

It’s a list that includes none other than the 37th President of the United States, Richard Nixon. Nixon’s the key player in the story of how the Indian guru came to America in the first place. It’s a tale that, true or not, has become part of Choudhury’s own personal folklore.

It was 1972, and Nixon, who was visiting the South Pacific, was suffering from phlebitis. Choudhury says he was summoned, and gave the president his special hot treatment.

Afterward, Choudhury says, “He got up, shave, with the dress, tie, suit, went for meeting. And he asked me first thing, ‘Sir, who are you? Are you an Indian black magician?’”

Choudhury explained that he was a yogi, and says Nixon was so happy with the treatment, he gave him an open invitation to come and live in the United States.

Yoga instructor says practice bolsters physical, spiritual health

Filed under: — site admin @ 11:40 pm

“A number of people look at yoga as preventive medicine,” says yoga instructor and massage therapist Lance Lorenzo. “And a lot of people come to yoga to relieve old injuries.” Both groups often also find that it relieves stress and increases energy; many students talk of improved eating habits and sleep patterns.

“People evolve in all different directions,” says Lorenzo, who has taught yoga at the Mesa YMCA for two years. “If a person can get through the first couple months, it’s amazing to see how it carries over into their life.”

And he speaks not solely of the physical sense, but also the spiritual sense. Though some facilities teach ashtanga yoga on strictly a physical plane, Lorenzo reminds students that the discipline is based in spiritual concepts.

Lorenzo starts every power yoga class with “Sun Salutation,” a series of gently flowing movements synchronized with breathing. The movements are of special benefit to beginners and people experiencing stiffness because they can be performed within individual comfort zones and promote flexibility.

Movements included in the Sun Salutation will be demonstrated each Thursday in June as part of the Exercises of the Week series. To perform the poses, Lorenzo recommends people wear something pliable but not too loose, because inverted poses can cause clothing to fall over the face. Yoga is best performed barefoot on a mat, which prevents slipping and protects joints.

The skinny on yoga

Sweat streams down her face and arms, and pools around her feet as she tries to concentrate on calming her breathing and keeping still. The dull, burning sensation in her left shoulder forces her to wince as the dry, hot air scorches her lungs and causes her eyes to water. Her legs shake uncontrollably as Palo Alto High School senior Junia Kim struggles for balance while holding the Warrior position for the last “four, lunge deeper into that right hip, three, lock out those elbows, two, hold it there annnnd exhale gently through your mouth as you relax into Savasana.”

Flexible yoga clothing stretches style to mat

Filed under: — site admin @ 12:15 am

Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle
By Robin L. Flanigan

After fashion designer Stella McCartney teamed up in February with Adidas to hawk a line of sportswear accessories, she slapped a $72 price tag – and her name in large letters – on a yoga mat.

Christy Turlington’s collection of yoga clothing and footwear has been going strong since fall 2000, when the model helped Puma create the Nuala brand – with a lotus-print tank top that sells for $45 – as “a symbiosis between the outer and inner being.”

There is no shortage of designer merchandise for yoga enthusiasts who prefer a contemporary approach to ancient philosophies. Same goes for devotees of the more recent Pilates movement.

As far as clothing goes, no purist worth his prana (that’s Sanskrit for energy and also the name of a high-end yoga clothier) practices in any old T-shirt and shorts. Dip into a “downward dog” position in a loose top and get a face full of cotton. Tip into a half-moon in loose shorts and, well, the position turns into a double entendre.

Instead, those who practice either discipline regularly are easily drawn to – and are willing to pay for – high-performance materials (they do the dirty work by wicking away sweat) with attractive designs and flattering cuts.

“You don’t want to be distracted in your practice by being uncomfortable, so in that case clothes do matter,” says Cyndi Weis, owner of Breathe, a Pittsford, N.Y., yoga studio, juice bar and boutique.

“And for the yoga fashionista, of course, we can always take it to another level. The clothes are bright and fun and happy. Why not?”

Breathe carries, among other brands, Nuala, Be Present and Lululemon Athletica, which has developed quite a following for its own stretchy material called Luon.

The dressing rooms at Lululemon’s standalone store in Toronto have been known to have a 15-minute wait.

Weis says newer fabrics including Luon are so adaptable, you can go from a hot yoga class – executed in heated rooms – to the grocery store on a cold winter day without needing to change clothes.

Manufacturers are focusing more on transitional pieces to satisfy a rapidly growing number of yoga buffs who fit regular sessions into their busy schedules. A recent study lumping together yoga and tai chi practitioners found that the number who practice frequently – defined as at least 100 days a year – increased 166 percent from 1998 to 2003, according to SGMA International, a trade association for the sports products industry. The study did not track Pilates figures, though the clothing market targets those exercise fans as well.

Some in the industry think some products go too far, however. “It’s unbelievable, some of the things they have out,” says pilates studio owner Jodi Brennan of Rochester, N.Y., referring to the rubber-studded hand and foot gloves recently introduced by Sun Salutations Inc., of Scottsdale, Ariz. The gloves are designed to prevent slipping and reduce injuries. (The company, accustomed to skeptics, urges potential customers to recall that there was a time when golfers didn’t wear gloves, either.)

In the end, comfort, at least in a public exercise class, is a two-way street.

“Some of the positions in yoga can be kind of embarrassing,” says Brennan, who also teaches yoga. “I’ve seen shorts that are too big, but I’ve also seen the really super-tight ones. That’s kind of gross – especially on a guy.”

Can doing pilates make you taller?

Filed under: — site admin @ 1:06 am

Hmmm not sure about this. But I found this story so enjoy.

Twenty years ago, Liz Torbert of Washington noticed she was shrinking. Diagnosed with scoliosis in her mid-20s, Torbert experienced no visible effects until after menopause, when her bone density decreased. Then her spine began to collapse. Throughout her adult life she had been 5 feet 5½ inches tall; by 2000, she’d shrunk to 4 feet 11½ inches.

“My ribs were touching my pelvis,” Torbert said. “I was leaning that far over.”

Today - at 75, about six decades after most people get their growth spurts - Torbert has regained two inches, standing 5 feet 1½ inches tall. She credits her new stature to three years of regular Pilates classes.

Pilates, an 80-year-old rehabilitation exercise regimen that has found a huge new audience in the past several years, has cultivated a reputation for being able to create longer, leaner muscles . . . and to increase height.

Yoga goes hip-hop as marketing takes hold

By Larry Fine

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Yoga is going hip-hop part of a rampant commercialization of the ancient exercise in America, where it is being marketed to new inner city audiences at Starbucks-like chains.

Yoga, the 5,000-year-old Indian discipline of exercise, diet and meditation, has exploded into a $3 billion (1.6 billion pound) industry in the United States, with urban entertainment impresario Russell Simmons the newest figure to join in.

Simmons, the founder of Def Jam Records, released a video series on Wednesday titled, “Yoga Live", with instructions set to 72 tracks of original hip-hop music – sounds that might have jarred the yogis of bygone days.

Simmons said he tried to distil the spiritual from the physical in his tapes. “We packaged it intentionally in a way for people to digest the physical practice,” he told Reuters. “It’s not meant to get them worried about religion or spirituality.”

Utah yoga-mat maker sues over rival’s links on Internet
Hugger-Mugger: The SLC-based company alleges a Colorado rival infringes on its trademark
By Steven Oberbeck
The Salt Lake Tribune

A Utah-based maker of yoga mats and other equipment contends a competitor is stretching the truth on the Internet and infringing on its trademark to the confusion of potential cus- tomers.
Hugger-Mugger Yoga Products of Salt Lake City has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for Utah alleging that Gaiam Inc. of Broomfield, Colo., contracted with several Internet search engines to use the Hugger-Mugger trademark as a “search term” to lure potential yoga equipment purchasers to its own Web site.
“Any representation that we are somehow related to Gaiam is reprehensible,” said Hugger-Mugger President Tom Chamberlain.
“Yet that is what we have discovered is taking place, and we want that unfair practice to stop,” Chamberlain said.
For example, the Utah company maintains that if Internet users type “Hugger Mugger” into the Google search engine, a portion of the screen will display: “Hugger Mugger - Yoga, Pilates, Chi & Fitness DVDs, Books, Mats, Clothing & Much More.”
It then lists http://www.gaiam.com as a link on the sponsored-site portion of the screen, the lawsuit alleges.
Gaiam Inc. did not return telephone calls seeking comment on the allegations. As of Thursday, however, the link does not appear on the sponsored-sites portions of Internet search engines named in the lawsuit, including Google, Yahoo and MSN.com.
“It could be they’ve taken those links down as a result of our lawsuit,” Chamberlain said.

Practice Yoga at Any Age

Filed under: — site admin @ 8:18 pm

Yoga is for anyone the young and the old. It’s even good fro babies as well. as reoprted by Town times

Town Times: “Practice Yoga at Any Age
By Kate Mitchell

Yoga is an ancient Indian form of exercise, which was developed using 14-year-old boys given their agile bodies at that age to, ultimately, allow yoga practitioners of any age to sit in meditation for hours. It is often depicted as being painful, requiring students to sit in difficult pretzel-like poses. Even Elvis Presley made fun of yoga in one of his movies! Fortunately, the practice has grown up and become a lot more accessible since then. Yoga has evolved into many different forms all with different goals, but nowadays it is a practice that can be used by anyone, no matter what age or body type.

Yoga is a series of postures that work to keep your body in perfect health. Along with working your abdominals and glutes, many yoga poses are reputed to help with back pain, stomach woes and even headaches. Some of the poses have a meditative quality that calms the mind and reduces stress as well as all the symptoms stress brings along with it. Yoga also teaches a set of breathing techniques that can both relax and invigorate your body. It is a form of exercise that can be practiced by anyone regardless of your body type, your fitness level or any injuries you may be coping with.

Can you be too old for yoga? A teacher of mine just recently told me about her student who was blind and very nearly deaf and decided to take up yoga. She was 88 years old. The woman is now in her 90s and is still finding ways to practice. Many studios offer classes dedicated to seniors and there are quite a few books and videos out that can get you started.

Lilias Folan (www.liliasyoga.com) is famous for her PBS yoga series and, being a senior herself, is a great inspiration. In the same way, you can never be too young to start out. Books such as Baby Om (www.babyom.com) and Itsy Bitsy “

Yoga Mat Review

I found a nice story on Yoga Mats and what makes a good yoga mat

To read this full story or learn more about Yoga and Yoga Mats please visit this site: kntimes.com

Yoga is also a type of exercise and the essential thing required is you yourself. It doesn?t need any equipment so you can do it anywhere. The best time and space is your garden in the morning hours. Spread a mat and do it. It can be done on your carpet in the room. But if you are going to do yoga on a hard surface such as wood or concrete, you will probably want something more comfortable to lie on. Blankets and towels tend to slip around and that can be dangerous, especially for the beginner. Most yoga practitioners advocate the use of yoga mats, which provide a warm, cushioned surface. Which mat you choose depends on your personal needs;

There are essentially three types of yoga mats: cotton or shiatsu, sticky, and Airex..

1. Cotton mats come in either regular or organic fibers. Organic cotton is distinctly different from conventional cotton; it is springier to the touch and just feels cozier. The fabrics are either natural or colored, usually with low impact dyes and are not treated with formaldehyde. Prices range greatly?an organic Cotton Shiatsu Mat (39″ x 84″) can run about $300 while a regular Cotton Yoga Mat (30″ x 72″) is about $95.00. Before buying these mats you must make your habit of doing it.

2. Sticky mat offers great grip, as well as cushion so that your practice is comfortable and you are not distracted by slipping and sliding. Most sticky mats are approximately two-feet by six-feet and made of PVC-baked foam. The mat is 1/8-inch thick and usually comes in your choice of color. Some people like to use a cotton mat on top of a sticky mat for extra comfort. A basic sticky mat costs about $20 to $30. These are great for beginners because they are very comfortable as well as affordable.

3. Airex Mats are simply thicker sticky mats. They are usually ?-inch thick and are used for extra cushioning. An Ultra Mat costs between $30 and $35. This type of mat is good for practitioners of astanga yoga, which involves frequent jumps.

Sticky mats are the best of these three and affordable. So, if you are ready to practice yoga, buy a good one for you.
